  • Wort (pronounced as wirt - rymes with dirt) refers to the unfermented liquid extracted in the mashing of malted barley. The mashing process can also be called the worting process. After mashing, wort is referred to as sweet wort. Once the hops have been added in the boiling stage, it is called hopped wort. Finally after the wort has been fermented it is called beer.
