The Original Gravity (OG) of a beer is the specific gravity of the beer measured before fermentation has started. It is typically measured in the fermenter before yeast has been added. If one knows the original gravity and Final Gravity of a beer, several important characteristics such as the percent of alcohol (ABV or ABW) can be calculated.
